Biological Systems Engineering
PROGRAM DEFINITION
Biological systems engineering "brings engineering to life." It leads to rewarding careers working with living systems and the environment. Students focus on one of three areas: biomedical engineering, bioprocess engineering, or environmental and water resources engineering. The program provides a broad, flexible engineering background with a biological emphasis. It also features communications skills, team-work, hands-on experiences, computer-aided design and problem-solving.
NEBRASKA POINTS OF DISTINCTION
• Received the University Departmental Teaching Award for outstanding instruction and mentoring
• The world's first biological systems engineering program
• Low student-to-faculty ratio

LINK TO UNDERGRADUATE BULLETIN
134 credit hours are required for graduation. The curriculum can be completed in eight semesters, but many students take longer due to internships or co-op experiences, study abroad opportunities, and part-time work or research. Such activities give BSEN students practical, first-hand experience, which is invaluable when pursuing jobs, or seeking admission to graduate or professional schools.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to University requirements students must meet the following
College requirements:
4 years of high school math, including:
2 years of algebra
1 year of geometry
1 year of trigonometry and pre-calculus
3 years of natural science, including:
1 year of physics
1 year of chemistry
- ACT composite of 24 or higher or SAT total score (Critical Reading and Math only) of 1120 or higher*
* If the minimum admission has not been met, a student still may be
admitted based on an individual review of his/her application.
