Grazing Livestock Systems

PROGRAM DEFINITION
This major integrates courses from different disciplines and provides a balanced education focusing on the interrelationships of ruminant livestock production, grazing land ecology and management, farm and ranch management, and marketing. The overall goal is to prepare students for productive careers in various phases of ruminant livestock agriculture and to be responsible citizens and stewards of natural resources.

A unique major integrating animal science, range and forage science, and agricultural economics.
A planned internship program that provides experiential learning and employment opportunities.
Numerous student clubs and judging teams in animal science, range management, and agricultural economics and business.

FACILITIES
University of Nebraska-Lincoln is situated in the heart of the grazing livestock industry.
The university has two production-size ranches (13,000 and 6,000 acres) that are outstanding research and education facilities.
On-campus courses taught in state-of-the-art teaching labs, computer labs, animal handling facilities, and greenhouses.
Readily accessible agriculture and natural resources library (C.Y. Thompson Library).
Center for Grassland Studies reference center that contains books, reports, periodicals and videos pertaining to grazing and grassland management.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID
There are separate scholarships designated for students in the GLS major that are in addition to scholarships offered by the University, the college, and the three participating departments. Some are renewable for the duration of the student’s program, depending on the scholarship and the student’s academic performance.
