PROGRAM DEFINITION
The Horticulture major prepares students for careers as professionals committed to improving the quality of life through the development, cultivation, utilization, design, and marketing of ornamental plants, fruits and vegetables, and turfgrasses. The wide spectrum of horticultural careers offers opportunities to individuals whose interests and strengths lie in a number of areas including science, artistry, and entrepreneurship. This range of possibilities is reflected in the multiple curriculum options within the major. In the Horticulture major we customize our program for your interests and also introduce you to exciting, unique career choices.

NEBRASKA POINTS OF DISTINCTION

• A turfgrass science program that conducts research on grasses and golf courses funded by the U.S. Golf Association and which provides our students with practical experience and carrer-connections to the expanding green industry.
• Beautiful campus landscapes and the Maxwell Arboretum offer a unique real-world classroom for Horticulture majors.
• Internships ad major botanical gardens, arboreta, and wholesale and retail green industry enterprises which lead to exciting career opportunities.

FACILITIES
The Horticulture program is located on the friendly East Campus and offers a diversity of teaching environments:

• Classrooms, labs, and the landscape design studio located in Keim and Plant Sciences Halls
  Beautiful campus landscapes including the Maxwell Arboretum
• Two quonset greenhouses and a glass-covered greenhouse area
• Research greenhouse areas
• Goodding Learning Center, including a computer lab
• Turfgrass field research facilities at the IANR Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS (What’s expected of you as an undergraduate student)

• Meet with your academic advisor on a regular basis
• Complete one or more internships providing exposure to commercial/professional horticultural enterprises
• participate in a student organization/club in your area of interest
