Landscape Architecture

Program Definition:
Landscape Architecture is one of the oldest professions. From the dawn of civilization humanity has looked to nature for survival and understanding. Whether it was working the soil to tap nature’s bounty or marking the ground as a way of understanding a broader cosmology, nature has been the environment that has nurtured civilization. Little has changed our environment remains a fundamental source for sustenance and inspiration. Landscape Architecture is the blending of ecology and aesthetics. Professionals in this field are involved in managing natural resources, designing parks, improving downtown public spaces, and pursuing a sustainable environment for us all. If you have a love for nature and our changing landscape, a desire to be a part of its shaping, and want to preserve it for generations to come, this might be the field for you.

The new Landscape Architecture professional degree program is unique in its collaborative format. Administered by the College of Architecture, the five year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) degree is taught through collaboration between the Architecture, Horticulture and Agronomy, and Community and Regional Planning programs. This arrangement provides students in the program a broad education through exposure to a knowledgeable faculty representing the many disciplines that impact and work together in shaping our environment. At the same time, the curriculum has the design studio as the core experience in the curriculum. This approach is designed to create and integrative learning environment in which students address and understand design issues from both an outside in and an inside out strategy.

Ultimately the goal of this program is to educate future design professionals for entry into the field of Landscape Architecture. They are educated to be committed to an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving and sensitive to the poetic needs of society. Whether it is addressing land based, urban, or rural design problems, or focusing on the analysis of natural resource issues, the graduates of this program will possess the skills and knowledge, using state of the art technology, to synthesize various forms of data, and collaboratively develop solutions to address problems in both the built and natural environment.
