Professional Golf Management
PROGRAM DEFINITION
The PGA/PGM™ Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a partnership between UNL and The PGA of America. It is a four-and-one-half year college curriculum for aspiring PGA Professionals. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom studies, self-study courses, internships and player development. UNL graduates of the program will have a basic background in managing golf facilities and related organizations, business and personnel management, restaurant and hospitality management, recreation, and golf instruction. Upon completion of this program, graduates with PGA-eligible employment will qualify for PGA membership.
NEBRASKA POINTS OF DISTINCTION
•One of the 20 schools in the nation to have an accredited PGA/PGM™ program.
•Capitalizes on nationally recognized UNL programs in business, turf science, and food and nutrition.
•PGM Director with Ph.D. in turfgrass plant breeding who played on college golf team has taught and conducted research in both academia and industry, and is a PGA member.
•PGM Internship Coordinator who graduated from an accredited PGM program and is now a PGA member as well as a competitive golfer.
•PGM Administrative Assistant with degree in journalism and experience in sports marketing.
•PGA teaching professionals that work with PGM students individually and in group settings to improve playing ability. These professionals have played in several U.S. Opens and PGA championships.
•PGM Student Club that runs multiple tournaments and holds monthly meetings with guest speakers from the golf industry.
•Strong support of the program from golf-related businesses and organizations in the state, including a world-renowned golf course construction company headquartered in Lincoln.
FACILITIES
•Outstanding new Wilderness Ridge Golf Course, with indoor practice facility, as the primary course, plus additional PGM partner courses – all minutes from campus.
•State-of-the-art golf simulation lab with two stations on campus.
•Golf club repair and design facility on campus.
•PGM room in which students can meet, study, watch the golf channel, practice putting, read golf-related reference materials, and access the Internet.
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS (What’s expected of you as an undergraduate student)
•Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA (required for registration in business courses).
•Participate in the PGM Student Club.
•Participate in minimum of three PGM tournaments each semester.
•Complete 16 months of full-time internships in three different settings.
•Take the PGA Playing Ability Test required number of times until passed.
•Pay all PGM fees by stated deadlines.
•Stay on schedule to pass three PGA Checkpoints.
