PROGRAM DEFINITION
In recent years forests of the world have come under increasing pressure from society. To some people, forests are a way of life, providing jobs and security as they raise their families. To others, they are home to a multitude of wildlife. And to still others, they are our last refuge from an increasingly technological society. Regardless of the definition, forests are a special place requiring knowledge, understanding, and careful management. As a forester, your job is to care for the forest and all of its associated resources.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a preforestry program designed to prepare students for admission to an accredited college or university where they can earn a four-year professional forestry degree. While the preforestry program does not offer its own four-year degree program, preforestry students are part of the UNL School of Natural Resources. This program offers an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in natural resource management, but unsure of a specific area, to explore a number of the majors within the natural resources area before making a career choice.
Students following the preforestry program are well prepared to pursue any major within natural resources such as fisheries and wildlife, as well as most other majors within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. For those who choose to pursue a professional forestry degree, there is a reciprocal agreement with the University of Missouri-Columbia. This agreement allows qualified students who pay resident tuition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to be charged resident tuition at the University of Missouri.
Most students interested in pursuing their degree in forestry at the University of Missouri transfer at the end of their first year; however, classes are available to allow students to stay at UNL for up to two years before transferring. Courses during the first year consist of biology, botany, mathematics, and English and can be applied to many majors in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Second-year students will take courses in chemistry, physics, ecology and natural resources. As a student in the program, you will work closely with your academic adviser to build a program directed toward your career goals. Advising includes career counseling as well as assistance in finding part-time and seasonal jobs. Practical experience is very useful in helping you find employment after graduation.
