Veterinary Technologist

PROGRAM DEFINITION:Two phases:

  • Veterinary technician phase: 
    • Complete a veterinary technician Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program at an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician school (not offered at UNL). 
    • Pass the national veterinary technician certification examination.
  • Veterinary technology phase:
    • Enroll at UNL in one of three options.
    • Transfer credits from the veterinary technician phase to UNL after receiving your AAS degree and passing the national cerrification exam.
    • Complete BS requirements at UNL.
    • Earn a BS degree from UNL.

Three Program options

  • Veterinary Science Option: for students interested in going to veterinary school. Qualify to apply to any veterinary school in North America   (see Preveterinary Medicine Red Bar and Preveterinary course requirements for Professional Cooperative Program in Veterinary Medicine Red Bar for more information).
  • Science Option: for students interested in a career in veterinary science, but not as a veterinarian. 
  • Business Option: for students interested in veterinary science and management.

  • A unique undergraduate program for veterinary technicians wanting a baccalaureate degree.  
  • Take courses not available at any other college or university in Nebraska.
    • Learn more about animal health and diseases from scientists and veterinarians studying and diagnosing animal diseases.
    • Learn more about animals from animal scientists studying animal production and animal products.
  • Gain additional experience in veterinary and animal production research, veterinary diagnostic services, and animal care as a student employee.
  • Socialize and learn from other students interested in veterinary technology, veterinary science or biomedical science as a career.

UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING:  
You will be assigned a faculty member who can help you examine your interests and abilities, define your career goals, and plan your academic career so you will qualify to apply to the college(s) of veterinary medicine of your choice and/or earn a BS degree.

  • CASNR provides more than $750,000 in scholarships annually to CASNR students.
  • Apply for university-wide or other scholarships for which you qualify.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
What do I have to take in high school to enter UNL as a veterinary technology student?

  • 4 units of English
  • 4 units of mathematics
  • 3 units of social sciences
  • 3 units of natural sciences
  • 2 units of foreign language

In addition, you must:

  • rank in the top half of your high school class OR
  • have an ACT composite score of 20 or higher OR
  • have an SAT total score of 950 or higher.

OUTCOMES:
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Become a certified veterinary technician AND earn a BS degree from UNL.
  • Continue your career in:
    • Biomedical or veterinary research
    • Veterinary pharmaceutics
    • Animal production
    • Animal protection and conservation

  • Qualify to apply to any veterinary college in North America.
