Our graduates work in greenhouses, nurseries, field operations, golf courses, sports fields, parks, botanical gardens, arboreta and universities.
Real-World Experiences
Students are required to complete two internships as part of their graduation requirements. You are encouraged to complete these internships with different businesses to experience various facets of the ag industry and boost your professional network.
Scholarships
The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture offers scholarships to students enrolled in the plant and landscape systems major. Each year, approximately 30 students receive departmental scholarships that total more than $65,000.

Experiments in Plant Science (PLAS 135)
Designing and conducting hypothesis-driven research with plants to measure response to abiotic factors in their growing environment.
Plant Propagation (PLAS 221)
Practice different methods of plant propagation and explore the effects of environmental management on propagation success using the scientific method.
Floral Design I (PLAS 261)
Principles, interpretation and emotional responses of floral design. Explored and practical experience in all aspects of flower arranging.
Hydroponics for Growing Populations (PLAS 307)
Globally diverse peoples are explored through culture, diets, food production systems and environment through the application of hydroponic plant production systems to address food needs.
Landscape Management Solutions (PLAS 326)
Use a problem-solving approach to identify and analyze landscape management situations in commercial, public and residential landscapes.
Turfgrass Science and Management (PLAS 327)
Scientific principles of turf species adaptation, turf and/or soil relationships, establishment, fertility, mowing, irrigation and pest control of turf species.

Dr. Sam Wortman, Professor and Environmental Horticulturist
Learn alongside Dr. Sam Wortman as you explore specialty crop production in and out of the classroom. He teaches courses including Plants, Landscapes and the Environment; Plant Propagation; and Specialty Crop Innovations. Students can get involved in hands-on research and work at the Husker Produce Farm, gaining real-world experience while helping improve sustainability and expand access to local food.
