• School of Natural Resources alum making a difference through exotic diets research

    Though there are more than 230 accredited zoos and aquariums across the nation, only about a quarter offer nutrition programs. Fewer still — about a handful — conduct research related to animal nutrition.

    Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium happens to be one of those that does, and SNR graduate Kelly Kappen is the nutrition manager there, working in the Bill and Berniece Grewcock Center for Conservation and Research.

    Stephen Baenziger, professor of agronomy and horticulture, was presented with the Prem S. Paul Innovator of the Year award during the NUTech Ventures 2017 Innovator Celebration Nov. 9 at Nebraska Innovation Campus.

    The award recognizes an individual who exemplifies innovation and entrepreneurship by advancing novel research into significant commercial utilization.

    Nine undergraduate College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) students and three visiting Borlaug Fellows attended the 2017 Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa, last month, named for famed agronomist, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and “Father of the Green Revolution,” Norman Borlaug.

    The University of Nebraska–Lincoln graduate student Weed Science Team took first place and the undergraduate team second in the North Central Weed Science Society Student Weed Contest held July 27.

    Hosted by Iowa State University, the contest was held at the ISU Field Extension Education Laboratory west of Ames, Iowa. The Nebraska team, represented by 14 undergraduate and 12 graduate students, had a successful showing, bringing home 16 team and individual plaques.

    Lincoln, Neb. — The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln announced Sept. 6 that total enrollment in the college has increased for the 2017 fall semester. The total number of CASNR undergraduate, graduate and professional students is 3,094.

    Samantha Teten, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln agronomy major minoring in agribusiness, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Independent Professional Seed Association. The IPSA created the scholarship program to support and encourage the education of future ag professionals. Teten, who will be a junior this fall, was one of five agriculture-related degree students selected nationally out of 180 applicants.

    For many college students, a residence hall is their first home away from home. It's not often that they get to live in a brand new space, but students living on East Campus will have an opportunity to do just that beginning this fall. 

    In the heart of East Campus, the new residence hall will have many amenities that the 1950s-era Burr and Fedde residence halls, the current East Campus housing, don't have, said Steven Jara, East Campus residence director. 

  • Waller celebrates 17 years as dean, looks to future

    Steven Waller will transition to a new role this summer after 17 years as dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. He will become interim director of the Center for Grassland Studies on July 1.

    Tiffany Heng-Moss, the college's associate dean, will become interim dean on July 1. A search committee will be assembled in the fall to begin the search for a permanent leader.

  • 40 students honored for research projects

    The 2017 Spring Research Fair featured more than 200 undergraduate research posters, 10 undergraduate creative exhibits, and 160-plus graduate research posters and exhibits on April 4-5 in the Nebraska Union.

    More than 400 students participated over the course of the two-day fair. To recognize students’ creative and scholarly achievements and accomplishments, prizes were awarded to the top undergraduate and graduate posters and exhibits.
